Day 8 - Llanfairpwll to Newborough

Who'd have thought we'd meet Nelson on the banks of Menai Strait looking down to Plas Newydd (National Trust stately home)?!?!  The statue was apparently erected in 1850 to help guide shipping, prior to Thomas Telford building his high suspension bridge, which then allowed tall ships to navigate this troublesome stretch of water.

The route passes through St Mary's Church, where a funeral was scheduled to take place this morning (Saturday).  A good number of graves contain the bodies of lives lost due to war - death in service or tragically very young life lost in equally tragic circumstances.

An idyllic path just a little inland from the Menai Strait

Due to time constraints and a very boggy field, we had to miss visiting Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber but were compensated by a lovely coffee spot at Moel y Don, close to the water's edge.  Will have to find time on a future visit to see the 4000 year old Solstice Cottage and a Druid passage tomb.  Lots of entertainment by the water - arctic terns swooping and diving for their lunch, chat with Nia the photographer with her 4 legged friend Pip 🐢, teams of racing canoes, speed boat enthusiasts - and a great picnic bench for another cuppa!

Nia's Pip 🐢is the one ON the table!!!

The cows in this field were thoroughly intrigued by Glenise who decided it was a good idea to play bow and invite them to join a doggy game......one came, then two, three, four and eventually most of the field to study a small four legged furry animal who was looking for a bit of fun.  Good job there was a fence between them and her 😬!!!!

Plentiful wild garlic along the route today, very pretty and very aromatic!

the display went on and on and on......

We had found a convenient watering hole/lunch stop along the way at Anglesey Sea Zoo, but Glenise decided a dip in a natural spring and its fresh flowing waters were not to be missed.  Also cool for the paws which had now covered more than 8 miles 🀯

Not too enthused by starting to walk again, surely we can have a roll in the grass and a mad half hour??

Why didn't you say we were going for a stroll by the sea again and on the beach - pebbles don't matter when you're a 4 wheel drive and there's lots of seaweed to explore and sniff!

A both very proud (and relieved!!) moment when Glenise showed off her agility and athleticism by scaling the ladder style like a pro........well done, Glenise πŸ‘ŒπŸ’˜πŸ‘

Getting there - just short of Newborough when we finished today.  Long but lovely walk along the Menai shore or meandering country lanes and (for the most part) fairly dry firm fields.
